We’ll be stopping by the Southgate House parlour Wednesday night for a show with the No-No Knots and the Prohibitionists. The entertainment starts around 9:30, with doors open at 8:30. It’s $8 for 18+, $5 for 21+.
As I awoke and began setting up for a productive day of writing and recording, I was confronted with the news that Vanity Fair, that tome of fragrance and watch advertisements supplemented by the occasional news article, had a writeup about Kentucky’s Creation Museum by a Mr. A. A. Gill. I’m all for mocking creationism, but it was this opening line that caught my attention:
“It’s not in the nature of stoic Cincinnatians to boast, which is fortunate, really, for they have meager pickings to boast about….Perhaps the biggest thing the citizens of the “Queen of the West” have to tell a tall tale about is the Creation Museum.”
Yes, you read that correctly. As a Cincinnatian, I don’t have much to be proud about except a religious museum located in a different state entirely. The whole article is here.
I had no choice but to put off my work and write a response to the editor. And please, New York readers, don’t take any of this too personally. Cincinnatians don’t laugh at you that much.
As a composer and musician who resides by choice in Cincinnati, I have one thing to boast about: Rust Belt cities like Cincinnati are far more conducive to living as an artist than New York City. Perhaps the moneyed class that Mr. Gill enjoys jet-setting with still believe Greenwich Village is an artists’ haven, but I assure him that those of us creating art in Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Detroit can’t help but snicker when we realize our monthly rent is less than the cost of a draft beer in Williamsburg. As for further boasting, my mind draws a blank; surely John Roebling was just throwing us a bone when he completed our suspension bridge before his later, slightly larger and more ungainly bridge in Brooklyn; of course the Cincinnati Reds are a good twenty years older than the Yankees, but far more rappers choose the latter as their cap of choice; obviously our Music Hall is situated in the most extensive intact urban historic district in the country whereas Manhattan had the foresight to “renew” several city blocks with a cloistered temple of 60’s International Style megaliths; and without a doubt Zaha Hadid simply forgot where she was when she chose Cincinnati as the site of her first building in America, which the New York Times – no doubt accidentally – called “the most important American building to be completed since the cold war.” I’m sure Mr. Gill picked up on all of this intuitively during the twenty minutes he spent here to write about a museum in a bordering state.
Ah, that felt good. Now back to more important work. . . .
Here’s a 3-minute clip of the performance of the ballet from last September. I’ll try and get at least one more short clip up in the coming week. Enjoy!

Come see us perform for the first time in almost a year! We’ve been on hiatus, and who knows when the next show will be, but I guarantee we will be at Baba Budan’s on Friday night, February 12th. Playing all the oldies, plus some of the music I wrote for the Ballet last Fall.
Opening for us will be the mesmerizing and antioxidant-rich Turmeric.
Music should begin around 10pm. All ages, free admission, no reason not to come!
239 W. McMillan St, Cincinnati OH
The final animation by Gastón Viñas (http://grapevineindustries.com) for my song “Bending Sky”
Here’s the second of three animations by Gastón Viñas (http://grapevineindustries.com) for my song “Bending Sky”
I was lucky enough for Gastón Viñas (http://grapevineindustries.com) to agree to do three short animations for my track “Bending Sky” from Dances For Heather. I’ll post one each day over the next few days. Here’s the first one!
For the people who cannot use iTunes or want higher-quality audio, I’m now offering “Dances For Heather” on CD. Keep in mind this is simply a burned disc in a paper sleeve with a B&W insert, not a printed disc in a jewel case like my other CDs. The price is only $5, plus $0.99 for shipping.
